An Intimate Concert with Mike Garson

Monday, May 17, 2010

Sunday’s (yesterday) concert, An Afternoon with Mike Garson, went really, really well. I had been a nervous wreck for days. I worried about the noise level from outside the gallery, room temperature, the attendance, etc. I was pretty much on edge until we were well into the second half of the performance. Glad that I did finally relax enough to see just how amazing Mike Garson was. He did the first half totally improv for more than 25 minutes. Second half he played for us Beatles, Gershwin, a couple of his own compositions, plus my favorite performance/moment of the concert, an improvisation piece with last 4 digits of someone’s phone number. He turned what someone called ET-like notes into incredibly beautiful music! I was in awe, my jaw dropped and stayed that way the whole time.

Here’s an iPhone video of the finale of the first half of the performance, totally improve, totally amazing. I hope there will be a video of the phone number improvisation later!

Superb tickling of the ivory :^) I’m hoping to hear the phone number improv piece!

I found the video clip on YouTube, but the audio is out of sync and sounds broken. I will try to contact them and see if it can be fixed before I post it here. :-)
