Hotlinking means using an image that’s hosted on someone else’s server, not your own. It uses someone else’s bandwidth and can cause headaches if it becomes popular and accessed many many times. That’s not nice, and some webmasters can get really, really mad. Who can blame them? As a punishment to hotlinkers, some webmasters switch the images to things most inappropriate. For example:

This

Can become this

So think before you hotlink an image. Do it only when you are invited to do so. If not, you may risk having embarrassing images showing up on your web site, or be forever associated with them on a post somewhere in Cyber Space. Want more examples? See here, and here. A word of warning though, to REALLY embarrass hotlinkers, these webmasters used some adult contents. I don’t think it’s very, very bad. But don’t say that I didn’t warn you first. :-)

Check out skitch.com. Watch the video. Warning. You’re probably gonna want it! Sorry Windows users, it’s only for Mac. But check it out anyway. Maybe you’ll want to bug them for a Windows version? hehehe

Here. I grabbed something off the Web and tested the annotation tools:

Sounds ridiculous, no? But it’s true! I was approached by someone at Schmap Guides about using one of my photos on Flickr. It was a picture I took of Chabuya’s neon sign. (Embarrassingly, taken with my cell phone.) I gave my consent and, voilà, it was published on 1/14. Check it out. The listing is highlighted in green.

It’s nothing to brag about, really. There’s no money involved. But to be called a “published photographer” just does something to the ego, yes? And Schmap gets a link back and free word of mouth advertisement. Win win. So, go get your Flickr photos named, tagged, geotagged. Fill those descriptions in. You just might become the next Schmap published photographer. :-)

Now, y’all have to excuse me. ( ;-) Marianne) I have to go practice some letting go to take care of that “ego” business.

Can this be the biggest knitted object in the world?

Quick Corn Chowder
Recipe from: again, The Best 30-minute Recipe, by Cook’s Illustrated Magazine

Can’t believe that this was a 30-minute recipe. The result was so creamy and delicious. I didn’t read that it was for 8 servings. So, we got a lot of leftover for another day. Highly recommend this cookbook. I also recommend their The New Best Recipe: All-New Edition with 1,000 Recipes for not-so-quick cooking. 1,000 recipes!!! There’s a little of everything in there. CB already made a terrific roast with a recipe found in the big book.
