I was going to name this post “Heaven”. But, as most of you know, there are serious wild fires going on in Southern California. The sun gave off an orange glow all day yesterday because of the smoke. I drove out to meet a client in South Pasadena and could smell the smoke there. According to KNBC.com, almost one million people evacuated from their homes. In San Diego County, one in three homes ordered to be evacuated. More than 1,600 homes destroyed. :-( Hard to fathom that any of the fires was started intentionally by someone. But arson is suspected. If only these people can feel EACH AND EVERY heartbreak they caused.

It is a good thing that the wind has died down for the moment.

What was that “Heaven” business about? Well, just a quick mention now that I have sufficiently dampened the spirit. We went to Osteria La Buca in Hollywood for dinner last Thursday. The food was heavenly. I don’t remember having ever enjoyed food that much. Everything from appetizer to desert that we had was just fantastic. I ordered Tenette with Bolognese sauce. Hand made pasta cooked to perfection. The sauce looked simple. But with just one bite and I could taste all the love and care put into making it. Yum! Highly recommended. Do make dinner reservations if you want to go in the evening. The place was packed!

I FINALLY finished “My So Called Scarf” on Tuesday. It is a nice 7 feet long. I like my scarves long. I am also quite impressed with the dye job of Manos del Uruguay. I thought that with the deep, rich colors of the yarn, it would definitely bleed a little when I soak it in warm water. Not a bit. The water stayed clear! Oh, and I love my foam tiles for blocking. :-)

My Harmony needles arrived yesterday. The tips are a little sharper than the Inox’s metal tips, which I was hoping for. (Photo shows US #3 Harmony and Inox.) The colors of the needles are quite fun! Definitely darker than what Knit Picks’ web site shows. Now I will have to see if they are durable. Time to cast on again for Spider Queen!

Have you seen Snowball dance? Check out the original post here. You can see a long version here.

Marianne, Moonflower sounds like a dream plant! Huge fragrant flowers (6 inches) that glow under the moonlight. It thrives in poor, dry soil. (Can you believe that?) Just plant and enjoy. You can’t ask for an easier plant! And I can just go on Burpee.com and order the seeds! Yippee for Burpee!!! This is making me want to garden again. Just need to figure out where. CB and I used to do more gardening, putting fresh flowers around our unit. But we have a couple of ladies here that think anything on the property is theirs to play with. They move them wherever they want. They throw their old plants in our pots. One of them waters plants with powerful jets that always damage the delicate flowers. The worst is the sprinkling of chemicals on the plants. We just stopped bringing in new plants because they get killed anyway.

Oh Jane, they have Bleeding Heart (which I love too) on Burpee.com. :-) And they can be shipped to California! It’s out of season though.

Speaking of growing something…

I am letting my hair grow long. Possibly longer than shoulder length. I’ve never had my hair that long. So, what the heck. If I don’t like it, I’ll just have it cut, and maybe donate it to a charity. Will they take graying hair? :-) Let me tell you something though. I went to the store to get hair product to keep my stubborn hair tidy. Talk about a large selection of stuff. I was totally lost. Oh! And I got this:

SCRUNCHIES! No, not for my hair! I’ll be using these to replace the rubber bands tensioning devices on the Lendrum. Hmmm… but maybe I’ll save a few for later. :-)

I am not a big reader of horoscopes. Not that I don’t believe that they can be true. It’s just that most of the times they are too general to be helpful. But few months ago I came across Michael Lutin’s Planetarium in Vanity Fair. It just made me want to nod my head in agreement, like getting a validation of my own observations. I especially loved it when I could shove the magazine in front of CB and said, “See! I told you so!” It’s still not detailed reading. But seem quite accurate on the general observations.

Here’s what Mr. Lutin said about us Virgos this month:

This is the time to conserve your energy and stick to a regime of consistency and moderation. People may call you selfish, but they have no idea what has transpired in the last couple of months to force you to wall yourself in. If you have anybody working for you, Chiron in your 6th house is giving you trouble there. And the conjunction of Saturn and the south node in your sign is not exactly a recipe for mindless ecstasy. You need to be 100 times more health conscious than ever. Just don’t get too nuts about catching cooties.

~ From Michael Lutin’s Planetarium, Vanity Fair

I’d better get going. We are getting flu shots this morning. ;-) Serious!

Kathina is an once a year occasion when people offer fabric to the community of monks. (Detailed description of Kathina at the end of post.) This year at Buddhist Temple of America (Wat Bhuridattavanaram) the ceremony is on Sunday, October 28. Like the previous years, the King of Thailand will send a representative to present his offerings.

Alms-round starts at 9:30am. People will offer food to the monks. The monks will then give blessings to the laypeople. After which the laypeople begin morning chants while the monks eat their meal. People usually start making individual offerings after the monks finish their meal. Items like medicine, soap, towels, donations, etc. But the main ceremony will start around 1pm. The King’s representative will begin by presenting the King’s offerings first.

Many people set up hot food stands on the temple ground. They prepare delicious food on the spot and share it freely with the visitors. Come join us and experience the spirit of giving. You don’t have to bring anything. There will be steamed rice prepared if you want to offer food to the monks during the alms-round at 9:30am. Come and participate in the ceremonies. Or come if you are just curious. :-) Ask me if there’s any question.

KATHINA
(Taken from Metta Forest Monastery’s web site)

The month after the Rains-retreat is the kathina season. In the time of the Buddha, this was the month when monks would prepare their requisites for the up-coming eight-month period when they could wander and meditate freely in the wilderness. These preparations would include patching their old robes or sewing new ones if the old ones were beyond repair. Lay supporters thus took the opportunity to provide the monks with cloth at this time, and the Buddha established the custom of the kathina, in which donors would present cloth to a community of monks as a whole. The monks would then make the cloth into a robe within that day and present it to one of their members whose robes were old and worn, or who was deserving in any other way. (The name “kathina” comes from the frame over which the cloth could be stretched while it was sewn, much like the frame used in a quilting bee.)

The texts do not say why the Buddha established this custom, but a few moments’ reflection will show that it promotes the virtue of cooperation among the monks and affords the opportunity for senior monks to pass on their sewing skills to more junior monks-skills very important for anyone who has few possessions and wants to be unburdensome to others. To encourage the monks to maintain this custom, the Buddha allowed them to enjoy certain privileges-i.e., to temporarily be freed from certain minor rules-for the remaining four months.

Because the kathina ceremony may be held only during one month of the year, and only once a year in any one monastery, it is considered a very special opportunity for donors to join in and develop the virtue of generosity together.

Note: Metta Forest Monastery is located in San Diego County. It was founded by the Ven. Ajaan Suwat, who also founded Buddhist Temple of America. The current Abbot, Ven. Ajaan Geoffrey Thanissaro is well-known for his English translations of Pali and Thai Buddhist texts. This year Kathina ceremony is held on November 4th at Metta Forest Monastery.

It’s Friday! I don’t think I’ll be cooped up inside all weekend now that I am feeling better. Crossing my fingers.

Hey! My Spider Queen swatch made an appearance on Lime & Violet: The Daily Chum on Wednesday. Thanks Sassy! That particular picture makes the swatch look a bit like scary spider web, I think. At first I thought it was just Jerry coming over to my blog for a visit. He’s a super fan of Lime & Violet. :-)

And thanks to Camping Jason, I am now exposed to Kauni! I want to get my hands on some Kauni Effektgarn! Look what you can do with it! But it looks like the only way to get them is on www.wollsucht.de and it’s in German only. Maybe CB can help me with ordering.

Remember this?

Yep. That’s the “My So Called Scarf” that I don’t even remember when I started knitting. No. It’s not done yet. Only half done. But now that I’ve dug it out, I intend to finish it quickly. The weather is getting cool. A nice warm scarf would be nice. :-)

Added at 10:57am, how could I forget to mention this. Jane has been knitting some beautiful Niebling patterns. It’s driving me nuts! In a good way. His designs are AMAZINGLY beautiful. But, they are almost impossible to get! Well, maybe I am just too laid-back to fight for them on eBay.
