Building A Hotel

Friday, September 21, 2007

Not sure if I’ve ever mentioned the building of a hotel in China. It is a dream of my father’s to leave behind something that he can be proud of. Mom was also very excited (and worried) about the whole thing.

My father and the good sister have been working for many years to get it built. Dealing with the officials in China is not an easy task. Talk about a surprise when I received these illustrations of billboards yesterday. I think the design is quite good. (OK Chris. Go easy on this one. :-) )

I really tried to stay away from the project. The whole family is involved, including the crazy ones AND my father’s other family. Plus, no one has any experience managing a hotel. It is a good thing that they decided to sign with Mercure to have them take over the management. At least it will be run properly. The grand opening is scheduled before the Summer Olympics 2008. Crossing my fingers. I wonder if I will get a free room. ha ha ha

It is in Zhangjiajie, Hunan, where the National Park Wulingyuan is located. Here’s a photo of the land that I took in 2002.

    Dear Jason,

You are wise beyond your years dear man! I am glad you are not involving yourself in the family project though I hope it will be a sucess. Sometimes having to work with family is a head ache or heart ache. You don’t need either. Very nice mock-ups of the buildings though!

Holy smokes, Jason. Smart move on your end to stay out of the involvment, no doubt, but dude, all I could think of was…. well, I guess someones family has to to build a hotel… I like the design.

Thanks Jane & Marianne. I do get asked to go and stay there for a few years every time I talked to my good sister. She plays the guilt trip on me because I am the only son. I’ll probably have to be involved with marketing. But living in China? I don’t know. It’s OK if I only have to fly there every other month, or something like that.

Yargh on the guilt tripping… well, marketing you can do ‘anywhere’ and by that I mean in your own home, this is a very good thing. Good luck with this, Jason, and take great care of yourself at the same time.

I try, Marianne. I try. We’ll have to see.

hey, those renderings look good to me!!

it’s so amazing that things can get built in China SO FAST. it’s unbelievable. what would normally take several years, can be done in less than a lickety split. the funny thing is, we’ve had projects done in China that were built off of design concept drawings, and not proper construction documents…and they are STILL STANDING. hahahaha.
