Did you know, taking vitamin B1 (Thiamine) can possibly help you repel mosquitoes? This is what I found on Wikipedia:

Some studies suggest that taking thiamine (vitamin B1) 25 mg to 50 mg three times per day is effective in reducing mosquito bites. A large intake of Thiamine produces a skin odor that is not detectable by humans, but is disagreeable to female mosquitoes. Thiamine takes more than 2 weeks before the odor fully saturates the skin. With the advances in topical preparations there is an increasing number of Thiamine based repellent products. Whilst there is considerable anecdotal evidence of Thiamine products being effective in the field (Australia, US and Canada), there has yet to be any clinical trials run to demonstrate the efficacy of these products.

Now, don’t go rushing to the store to stock up on vitamin B1. Talk to your doctor first if you want to try it! I just thought this was interesting.

What?!? Oh! I am suppose to give a plug on The Fabulous Fiber Fest. It is happening this Friday through Sunday, 8/17 ~ 8/19, at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium. Do stop by if you are in the area. I will be there everyday from opening to closing, doing fiber related activities somewhere in the show. I am also taking two tablet weaving classes with Michael Cook. That is going to be fun!

Jade, a stone of protection, beloved by the Chinese people. It repels evil, deflects harm. According to Melody, it is also a dream stone. It improves ones remembering of dreams, and assists in “dream solving”.

My mother left behind a beautiful jade ring. It is completely carved out of jade. Different shades of green with a reddish brown oval shape spot. And, it fits me.

I seldom pay attention to dreams. I don’t usually remember them. Often it is like that I don’t dream. After Mom’s passing, many asked me to pay attention to my dreams for her visit. Even my Buddhist teacher asked if I dreamed of her. I had one dream earlier on, but it wasn’t one that answered many questions. So few days ago, looking at the lovely ring that I had been wearing for a few days, I decided to wear it to sleep and see what would happen. I dreamed of my Mom 2 days in a row.

I don’t want to talk in details of my dreams or what they mean. I can tell you this, the best part was seeing her with a big smile, waving at me. I don’t think she was waving good-bye. But she has yet to enter my dream again after that. Even as I continued to have vivid dreams. Probably busy. :-)

I took the ring off last night for a break.

I’d better catch up on posting. July spinning guild meeting was once again full of fun. I took the Four Corner Hat in for Show & Tell. Shared the story of knitting it with the group. It felt really good. Again, I’ll let the photos do most of the speaking:

Show & Tell

Fiber Pushers

Chris was plucking the buns again. He he he

L.A. Times reporter came to interview individuals over 50. I think the article was about what people over 50 do in L.A.

Dave brought his huge, motorized drum carder and did a demo of carding and dizzing:

Ruth shot a video of Dave’s demonstration. You can see it here. (Please try your best to skip the first video. Pretty please!) To see more guild meeting photos, go here.

John taught a bulky singles class at April’s guild meeting.

This is what I made:

Not really bulky. More like heavy worsted. Need more practice!

I have decided on a hat pattern to knit.

Meet Triple-Patterned Watch Cap from “Hats On!” It should be a fun knit. But I have a question on the pattern already. As you can see, the cuff has a stranded pattern also. It is knit on the reversed side so that when your flip the cuff up it shows off the pattern. The instruction tells you to knit the cuff pattern, then TURN and start knitting the body. Turn? That simple? I imagine that you turn the tube inside out, then continue knitting in the opposite direction? (Which is still going to the left after turning the tube inside out.) Without cutting the yarn? Would that cause any problem? Oops! That’s not just A question.

I am still PLANNING to knit a fair isle scarf. Still not much luck searching on the Internet for a good pattern. Guess I’ll have to try to come up with one. I just wonder how I will determine how much yarn to get.

I am also very very tempted to start a new lace project. It’s all Jane and Alice’s fault. Showing us all that lovely lace knitting. I am thinking Spider Queen? Yeah, I know, I have that Candle Flame Shawl I started months ago. It is just kind of boring. I am going to rip it and knit something else with it.

Here are some scary stuff for you. We were looking through photos that Mom kept in her house. I came across some of my old pictures:

Me at 16! Now, I don’t want to be that skinny again. But I really don’t mind having a thin face again. Ha ha! Hmmm… How about growing my hair long…

Short post. I seem to have caught a fair isle fever. Or should I say “stranded color knitting”. I am just loving it. I have to get one started ASAP.

Actually, I was knitting “We Call Them Pirates“, but the color combination was not to my liking. I don’t want to go back to “We Call Them Pirates”. Not that I dislike it. I may go back to it in the future. I just want something different. I am eying some of the hat patterns in “Hats On!” by Charlene Schurch. You know Charlene, who gave us the “Sensational Knitted Socks” books. But I am also considering knitting a fair isle scarf. Two-color pattern. Any suggestion on scarf pattern?

Added question: I can’t find a scarf pattern in my Fair Isle technique books. Only pictures of them, and they all look like flattened tubes to me. Are fair isle scarves usually knit in the round too? That makes sense.
